Rafael is the newest addition to the Alaska Running Academy coaching staff. He brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience. His athletes have done extremely well under his guidance. Coach Echavarria began coaching here in Anchorage for Dimond High School back in 1994. He coached there for well over a decade before signing on as an assistant coach at the University of Alaska, Anchorage. While at Dimond he coached several multi event athletes to region and state titles. While at UAA his athletes set numerous school records, earned N.C.A.A. All-American awards, won conference titles and even had a long jumper from Alaska win the N.C.A.A. Div.II individual title. Most recently, while coaching independently, his athletes have continued to excel. David Registe (Palmer H.S./UAA) won the sliver medal in the long jump at the 2012 summer Pan Am Games and narrowly missed qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Trials. Stacey Nieder, Masters (40-44 age group) won two national titles in the high jump under Coach Echavarria's guidance. She won the 2011 USA Masters Indoor Championships and set an American age group record and during that same year during the outdoor season, Stacey competed in the USA Masters World Championships and won another age group title. Rafael is one of the best, if not the best, multi-event coaches out there. We are very excited about Coach Echavarria's level of knowledge and expertise and what he will provide to our young developing athletes here in Alaska.
